Welcome to the first issue of The Emergent Self newsletter. New-article emails will let you know when an essay is published. This newsletter has a different purpose: it gives us room to step back, notice connections among the essays, and explore questions that continue to unfold after publication.

Several recent essays return to one concern: the meanings we inherit and create do more than describe the world. They shape what we notice, whom we trust, how we treat one another, and who we are becoming.

The Closed Circle: Fundamentalism, Agnotology, and the Making of Ignorance

One thought has stayed with me since writing this essay: a closed circle is sustained as much by rules of attention as by rules of belief. When a community decides in advance which questions may be asked and whose testimony can count, ignorance can appear to be certainty. The challenge is not merely to add more information, but to reopen the conditions under which learning is possible.

The Stars Are Real. The Lines Are Ours.
|
The constellations offer a useful reminder that recognizing construction does not require denying reality. The stars are there; the lines, names, and stories are ours. Much of human conflict begins when we forget which parts we encountered and which parts we supplied.

Lost Humanity: How We Become Less Humane
|
Humanity is often treated as something we possess simply because we are human. I think it is better understood as a practice. We enact it through attention, restraint, compassion, and the willingness to let another life matter. That also means our humanity can deepen through the responses we choose next.

The Subscriber Library is now open. It brings together materials designed for use beyond a single essay, including The EIR Guide and other resources for reflection, conversation, and practice. I will continue adding to the library as new guides and tools are developed.

A THOUGHT TO CARRY FORWARD
|
Every interpretation carries a future within it. The meaning we give an experience does not merely explain what happened; it helps shape what becomes possible next.

LOOKING AHEAD
|
In the coming weeks, I will continue exploring how belief, belonging, uncertainty, and moral responsibility participate in the selves we are becoming. I will also be expanding the Subscriber Library with practical materials that can help move these ideas from reflection into everyday life.
